Abstract

Mapping the territory of youth sport in China is extremely difficult, not only because of the relatively large numbers of young people in the Chinese population, but also because of the marginal position of sport in the school curriculum and the tendency for state sport policy to focus on elite and mass sport rather than youth sport. According to the Ministry of Education (MoE, 2014a), in 2014, there were more than 162 million school-aged children and young people (7–22-years old) in 316,166 schools based in 37 provinces and municipalities, with over 24 million graduate and undergraduate students attending 2,491 higher education institutions. Overall, school-aged young people constitute approximately 13.6 per cent of the total population.
