Abstract

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region includes Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian Territory, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The MENA has been a site of much discussion and debate over the past three decades. The region is faced with ‘declining productivity . . . decreasing school enrolment, and high illiteracy, and with health conditions lagging behind comparable nations’ such that they seem ‘richer than they are developed’ (Bayat, 2010, p. 1). The recent political and social movements in this region have damaged infrastructures and displaced many people, especially youth.
