Abstract

Since the 1970s, a series of court decisions fueled nationwide debate and discussion around end-of-life care, resulting in a national consensus regarding patient autonomy. These cases highlight the importance and difficulties in balancing the interests of individuals with those of the general public and have shaped and defined the ethical landscape around end-of-life decision making.
