Abstract

We began this project with the explicit purpose of addressing most of the lacunae in our previous effort, Companion to Urban Design, published by Routledge in 2011. One of the lacunae we were particularly conscious of was the dominance of the Anglo-American axis of scholarship in the previous volume. We felt that the absence of representation and inclusion of voices and examples from the Global South made the definition of the urban design field incomplete. In compiling this edited volume, we accordingly approached many scholars with expertise in comparative urbanism and urban design, as well as many who are situated in countries outside the UK-US axis. We wanted to have a broad coverage of urbanism and urban design as conceived and practiced in other countries, especially those from the Global South, which are going through major urban transformations and explosive urban growth.
