Abstract

Premature Ejaculation is usually cited in the literature as the most common of the male sexual dysfunctions. Although reliable incidence data in support of this contention are not yet available, our clinical experience confirms that this disorder is indeed highly prevalent. Futhermore, it is our impression that this diagnostic category encompasses an extremely diverse patient population. For one, premature ejaculation occurs in men at all socioeconomic levels. Secondly, there seems to be no correlation between premature ejaculation and specific sexual conflicts or, for that matter, non-specific psychopathology. We have observed premature ejaculation in men who are otherwise psychiatrically healthy and in men who suffer from various forms of psychopathology. Third, these patients show a similar diversity with respect to the quality of their marriages; some premature ejaculators seem to be in excellent relationships, while others are involved in hostile or destructive interactions with their partners.
