In what follows we are going to be concerned with “modern debates” in the three leading journals in the field of Literature and Religion—Christianity and Literature, Literature and Theology, and Religion and Literature—which we regard as representative of the debate in general. 1 We will first present a brief overview of the journals as well as the subject matter treated in them, before outlining six aspects that we see structuring approaches to the field. 2 In the second half of this essay, we will focus on examples of debates by applying our approach to single articles published in each of the journals.
