Abstract

Next generation mobile networks (NGMN) are regarded as the future—almost present—platform for ubiquitous broadband. They are also the next step in the evolution of mobile technologies from existing third generation (3G) networks. From a strict technological perspective NGMN encompasses fourth generation (4G) mobile technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX; explained below), convergent technologies 1 such as femtocells and Wi-Fi, and short-range wireless data technologies such as near-field communications (NFC) completing a network of sensors and tags located on surrounding objects. In addition, new types of mobile devices, from smartphones to tablets, complement the infrastructures from the consumer equipment side. 2
