Photography has become mobile, more rapidly even than anyone could have anticipated. Only ten years ago, a journalist from a major newspaper asked for my thoughts about the new technology of camera phones. Having no direct experience with the new technology, and reluctant to engage in boosterism, my response was circumspect, although I was quoted as saying that they “could mark a change in social record-keeping similar to the 1888 introduction of the Box Brownie, the first widely affordable camera.” 1 The newspaper may have understood their potential impact better than I did, because to my surprise the article featured prominently on the front page. And indeed, no phone is complete today without a camera, the quality of which has continued to improve as sales of traditional cameras have simultaneously shrunk.
