Abstract

Entertainment has traditionally been a central driver in the evolution of cultural industries. In the early days of media studies, Paul Lazarsfeld—one of the pioneers of functionalist mass communication research—identified entertainment as one of the main functions of the emerging media in the 1930s, 1 and the theorists of the Frankfurt School put it in the very core of their idea of a universal pseudo-culture. 2 Related to spectacle and to new kinds of public, media entertainment simultaneously fascinated and horrified philosophers and sociologists through the twentieth century. 3
