Abstract

Sociological system theory is closely linked with Niklas Luhmann, a renowned sociologist, who published countless books and articles on this subject, mostly in German. Luhmann was influenced by the phenomenologist Edmund Husserl and the sociologist Talcott Parsons, but also by authors and thinkers like Herbert Simon, Robert K. Merton, Erving Goffmann, Humberto Maturana, Gregory Bateson, George Spencer-Brown and Fritz Heider (Stichweh 2011). When Luhmann joined the University of Bielefeld, he was reportedly asked about his research plans. His answer was: ‘Theory of society, term of 30 years, no costs’.
