Abstract

At the end of 2013, a fundamental political decision was made in Germany. Based on the fact that a considerable number of children are born with ambiguous sex characteristics, the lawmakers decided to exclude the obligation to indicate the sex of newborns in birth registration documents. Thus, Germany is the first country in Europe where a person can chose which sex to have, if any. It is an open question if and how this new ruling affects the dichotomous gender order in many areas of the society and, specifically, in sport. 2
