Abstract

This chapter builds three themes. First, class is arguably the most important determinant of participation in sport. As Donnelly (2011: 185) states, ‘Social class, both on its own and in combination with gender, race/ethnicity, and other social characteristics, is the most important determinant of participation in sport and physical activity’. While Donnelly’s comment is with respect to Canada, the same can be said for countries around the world. Class, in short, is a crucial determining factor in terms of participation in and the experience of sport.
