Abstract

Two major academic fields of study that have contributed significantly to our understanding of the sporting world are sociology and economics. Unlike in some areas of inquiry in which sociology and economics have acted primarily as theoretical competitors, in the study of sports, they have been largely complementary to one another. In this article, I highlight the ways that these two fields have contributed important perspectives to more fully address and satisfactorily understand issues in sport. I also highlight areas where they have not overlapped as much as perhaps they should, concluding with some ideas on ways that economics and sociology might fruitfully align future research agendas in the study of the sporting world.
