Discussions regarding theology and culture tend in one of two directions. Put colorfully, there are those Christians who ask of the wider culture, “What the hell are they doing?” And there are those at the other end of the spectrum who ask, “What in heaven's name are they doing?” The first group understands the world to be basically hostile to the gospel, the distance between God and creation great, stretching to infinity. Their emphasis is on divine transcendence and otherness. The other group recognizes that all that is true, lovely, and good comes from God, the fountain of life. Their emphasis is placed on the presence of God in the world, the nearness of God to and within creation.
