Abstract

What is feminist theology? Feminist theology is not just women doing theology. Women have done and continue to do theology that does not question the masculinist paradigms of traditional theology. Nor is feminist theology simply the affirmation of “feminine” themes in theology. What has been called “feminine” in Western thought has been constructed to complement the construction of masculinity. Sexism in patriarchal anthropology is a system of stratified relationships. Both masculinity and femininity are constructed as part of this same system. Thus, to make the feminine side of this system explicit in religious symbolism does not undermine but empowers the masculine side, while restricting women to what is defined as “feminine.”
