Picture the history of Latin America as you may have received it through schoolbooks or film: First, a handful of European adventurers uses political chicanery and brute force to overturn glittering Aztec and Incan empires; then, utopia-minded friars conduct a spiritual conquest through ritual and education; meanwhile European settlements displace already settled peoples, and a new economy dependent on forced labor emerges. All the while, outbreaks of European diseases decimate immunologically defenseless populations. So goes the drama of early encounter.
