Historically, the study of organization entails ahistorical inquiry. Or at least, this is the usual impression. Especially in overview texts, we of course acknowledge the rise of modern organization as an important historical phenomenon, as well as the history of ideas and practices in and around organizations. But the bulk of actual research tends to take contemporary features of organizing for granted, as if their existence is self-evident and timeless.
