By Modern Korean we refer to contemporary Korean, called Hyentay kwuke in Korean. 2 The period spans from the Kabo reform (1894), the cradle of Korea’s modernization and enlightenment movement, through the Japanese occupation (1910–1945) and the Korean War (1950–1953), to today, when the Korean peninsula remains divided into North Korea and South Korea.
