Abstract

Sports talk radio, which broadcasts sporting discussions, is a popular sport-media format with an almost exclusively male demographic. In addition to play-by-play coverage of local sports teams, most shows offer discussion and analysis of sport as part of their regular programming. These shows are generally characterized by an often-boisterous on-air style personality, and all-encompassing debate by both hosts and callers. Sports talk is available in both local and syndicated forms, and is carried in some form on both major North American satellite radio networks. In the United States, for example, most sports talk formatted radio stations air mostly syndicated programming, with ESPN and Radio Fox Sports Radio being the most popular. 1
