Abstract

Jason Collins recently became the only current professional male athletes in the top four American leagues (American football, baseball, basketball, and ice hockey) to publicly come out as gay. Conventional wisdom presumes that many more gay athletes exist and that they will come out of the closet in the coming years as tolerance for homosexuality spreads into the locker room. This chapter challenges this presumption. I instead argue that the reason there are so few openly gay male athletes is because so few exist, not because so many are in the closet.
