Abstract

Within the sociology of sport, researchers have paid scant attention to intersectionality; the majority of research continues to focus on one dimension of ‘gender’ or ‘race’ (Scraton, 2001). Moreover, the gender and sexuality of ethnic minority athletes and/or the impact of ‘race’ upon the gendered and sexualised experiences of sportspeople are rarely acknowledged (see Anderson and McCormack, 2010a, 2010b; Caudwell, 2009; McDonald, 2002). McDonald (2006) also asserts that in much of the sport scholarship about gay and lesbian sexuality, ‘white’ is the normative frame of reference. This chapter therefore offers an important contribution to an otherwise neglected area of study.
