Abstract

This chapter reviews tourism activities, settings and providers, both private and public sector, which fall under the heading of nature-based tourism. The sector is broad, growing and diversifying. We examine the supply and demand for nature-based tourism; consider its social contexts and traditions; and discuss the various ways in which people, as tourists, experience relationships with nature and consume some of nature’s goods and services. We argue that recognition of this complexity and diversity can lead to a more sophisticated understanding and management of nature-based tourism.
