Abstract

The maritime geography of East Asia is extremely complex. The East Asian seas are the greatest concentration of seas in the world covered by the regime of enclosed and semi-enclosed seas in Part IX of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). However, economic, political and military competition is in many respects more intense in these seas than elsewhere in the world’s maritime domain, and this has prevented development of cooperative regimes for managing these seas and their resources.
