Abstract

At the same time that it was a basin pioneering the adoption of regional marine management instruments (Mediterranean Action Plan, 1975; Barcelona Convention, 1976), the Mediterranean Sea was characterised by coastal States showing restraint in declaring jurisdictional rights beyond the territorial sea for a (relatively) long period of time when the creation of extended jurisdictions proliferated in the world’s oceans (see Chapter 2, Changing geopolitical scenarios).
