Abstract

This is an exciting period for the global aquaculture industry as one of the fastest-growing food producing sectors. In 2012, the aquaculture sector provided almost half of all fish for human food (FAO, 2014). This chapter provides a broad overview of marine farming as a multi-species and diverse industry that transcends complex biomes, ecosystems, governance arrangements and social acceptability levels, to mention only a few of the current and future issues impacting development.
