Positive psychology is a contemporary movement oriented toward exploring human happiness and thriving (Kristjánsson, 2012). It contrasts with the problems and deficiencies commonly studied by psychologists. Although the movement has no well-defined onset, it received a strong impetus from the publication by Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi (2000). Among its historical precursors are humanistic theories, such as those of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, which emphasize the role of the self in human functioning.
