Abstract

Fathering—as a research field and as a set of practices and identities—is inextricably tied up with mothering as well as with gender roles and relations. As this book demonstrates, much of the interest in fatherhood initially arose out of concerns about father absence and the need to attend to father-child relationships as an important part of men's lives and men's identities. Yet, the now burgeoning scholarly and popular attention given to fathering is also rooted in rapidly changing gender roles and relationships at home and in the workplace over the past few decades, particularly within North America, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe.
