Abstract

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, has existed as a discipline since Cocconi and Morrison (1959) published a rationale for a search for narrow-band radio transmission from nearby stars. 1 The following year Drake (1961) performed initial observations of two nearby stars, Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani, using a 26-meter parabolic dish antenna tuned to 1.42 GHz. No extraterrestrial signals were detected. In the nearly six decades following, SETI endeavors have expanded in number of targets, sky coverage, and spectral coverage.
