Abstract

Over the last 40 years or so, much effort has been devoted to advancing the theory and practice of optical waveguides, mainly driven by the optical fibre data and communication systems market. In addition to the optical fibres themselves, a number of optical devices, such as diode lasers, couplers, wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers, external modulators and photonic integrated circuits are formed on, or make use of, optical waveguide structures and their development has demanded a thorough understanding of waveguide theory. Equally important, but on a smaller scale, research and development of optical sensors for physical, chemical and biomedical sensing, including microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip devices, has also provided a stimulus for the development of new types of waveguide devices and theoretical models to predict their performance.
