As the type species of the Leporipoxvirus genus in the Chordopoxvirinae subfamily, Poxviridae family, myxoma virus (MYXV) is a large, double-stranded DNA virus that replicates in the cytoplasm of infected cells. MYXV causes the generalized, frequently lethal disease, myxomatosis, in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Other leporipox-viruses include hare fibroma virus, rabbit fibroma virus (also called Shope′s fibroma virus), and squirrel fibroma virus, which naturally infect various leporid and squirrel species.
