Members of the subfamily Betaherpesvirinae are characterized by host-specific infection and cell type-specific replication in culture. In general, these viruses are cell-associated and slow growing in culture. The site of latency in some members of the subfamily is monocytes. The genomes of viruses belonging to this subfamily are characterized by the presence of homologues of the Human herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5) gene US22 [1].
