Abstract

Molecular imaging of angiogenesis has been a rapidly growing field in the last decade, has become a part of routine clinical care of oncology patients, and steadily builds its importance for the cardiovascular community. Molecular imaging represents a very powerful tool for the noninvasive characterization, visualization, and quantification of various biological processes, including angiogenesis at the molecular and cellular level in living laboratory animals and humans. The successful application of this technology requires the availability of imaging probes that target molecules of interest, access to imaging instrumentation that enables the visualization of the probes’ biodistribution, and widespread education of medical and lay communities and regulators to lower the reimbursement barriers of high medical care costs.
