Abstract

Track is the most fundamental component of the railway infrastructure (Figure 1.1). Track supports the rolling stock by distributing wheel loads from the track superstructure to the track substructure. The substructure of the track, which includes ballast, subballast, subgrade, and drainage arrangements, has the dominant influence on track performance. Railway Geotechnics is written to address the challenges associated with designing, constructing, and maintaining a well-performing and long-lasting railway track. This book presents methodologies and technologies that can be used for the development of a state-of-art railway track substructure and complements the previously published book Track Geotechnology and Substructure Management by Selig and Waters (1994).
