Abstract

Members of the high GC, gram-positive bacteria have been among the earliest bacteria, 1 , 2 isolated and/or described (Schinzia alni = Frankia alni Woronin 1866, 3 Bacteridium luteum = Micrococcus luteus Schroeter 1872, 4 Microsporon diphthericum = Corynebacterium diphtheriae Klebs 1875, 5 Actinomyces Harz 1877, 6 Mycobacterium tuberculosis Zopf 1883, 7 Micrococcus agilis = Arthrobacter agilis Ali-Cohen 1889, 8 Cladothrix asteroides = Nocardia asteroides Eppinger 1891, 9 Rhodococcus rhodochrous Zopf 1891, 10 Streptothrix albidoflava = Streptomyces albidoflavus Rossi Doria 1891, 11 Actinomadura madurae Vincent 1894, 12 Corynebacterium Lehmann and Neumann 1896, 13 Bifidobacteria Tissier 1900, Bacillus acnes = Propionibacterium acnes Gilchrist 1900, 14 Brevibacterium linens Wolff 1910 15 ). Many were recognized as belonging to a major taxon in the domain Bacteria, the actinomycetes, 16 from the earliest taxonomic descriptions.
