Abstract

While the original intent of the previous edition was to provide basic knowledge and practical information about working with microorganisms, in a clear and concise form to scientists in the field, we found that the book was also being used by business people requiring assistance in understanding microbiology and underlying technologies associated with the companies they were considering supporting. Much of this is due to the fact that microorganisms form a main portion of the intellectual property (IP) of many startup companies in the healthcare industry. This chapter is meant to provide business people with a few basic insights into the industry regarding the various commercialization opportunities. A secondary goal of this chapter is to introduce academic scientists to some of the factors that business people consider when deciding on making an investment in a company, a technology or a product. Academic scientists that are considering commercializing their research should find this information useful.
