Abstract

This chapter is focused on single-point measurement by intensity-based optical fiber sensors. General concepts presented in Chapter 4 are now applied to the situation where optical fiber is the sensing element. As mentioned there, these sensors rely on the variation of the received optical intensity to analytically measure the variation of the parameter under observation. They are simple in concept, and the cost of implementation is low when compared to other types, such as the ones relying on interferometric techniques. Nevertheless, they may require special referencing methods to guarantee that the change in the received optical intensity is only due to the measurement parameter and not from other undesired sources.
