Xanthomonas oryzae is the most important bacterial pathogen of rice. Two closely related pathovars, namely, X. oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and X. oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc), cause the rice diseases bacterial leaf blight (BLB) and bacterial leaf streak (BLS), respectively. A number of plant species are vulnerable to infection by X. oryzae; however, the host species in which it has the greatest economic impact is rice. 1
