Abstract

Two mycoplasmas belonging to the so-called “mycoides cluster,” Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides “small colony” (MmmSC) and Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp), are responsible for causing contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) and contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), respectively. These organisms induce acute or subacute disease in ruminants characterized by unilateral serofibrinous pleuropneumonia with severe pleural effusion.
