Vesicular stomatitis (VS) is a disease of the western hemisphere with geographical areas throughout South America, Central America, and Mexico considered endemic. Sporadic outbreaks of VS occur in the United States primarily in the southwestern states and must be considered one of the most enigmatic diseases of the western hemisphere. Throughout the second half of the last century, many bright minds worked diligently to answer difficult questions surrounding this disease. Several virologic, pathologic, and epidemiologic questions remain unanswered about this disease whose effect on individual animals is generally innocuous but whose political effects are substantial.
