Abstract

The use of biological agents and toxins as weapons of mass destruction is particularly nefarious given that detection of an attack may not occur until significant numbers of patients are diagnosed. In the case of a highly contagious agent, considerable numbers of secondary cases may occur during the lag time between dissemination of the agent and identification of an attack.
