Abstract

Yellow fever (YF) is a viral disease transmitted to subhuman primates and humans by the bite of mosquitoes. Until the development of an effective vaccine in the 1930s, for several centuries, YF had been one of the most feared infectious diseases of the world not only for its high mortality but for the enormous social and economic impacts. The virulent trait was even exploited in bioterrorism as early as 1894; and during the Cold War, an aerial dissemination trial of uninfected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes was conducted to determine their survival, with an ultimate objective of developing YF virus (YFV)-infected mosquitoes for biological warfare.
