Abstract

Security sensitive microbes and toxins (also known as select agents and toxins) are noted for their ability to incapacitate and decimate human, animal, and plant hosts. The veracity and pathogenicity of these biological agents are undoubtedly enhanced by their common occurrence, ease of dissemination, and difficulty in identification. Not surprisingly, throughout history, security sensitive microbes and toxins have been exploited in one form or another as biowarfare and bioterror agents that create fear and panic well beyond the actual physical damages they are capable of causing. In the following sections, a brief overview is presented on the historical aspects of security sensitive microbes and toxins. This is followed by a concise summary of the current status in relation to the regulation of security sensitive microbes and toxins. Finally, the future development concerning these biological agents is discussed.
