Abstract

Hendra virus (HeV) and Nipah virus (NiV) are of public health and economic concern as they have a broad host range, causing respiratory and/or neurological disease in humans and domesticated animals such as horses, pigs, dogs, and cats, and infection is often associated with high mortality. In their reservoir host, the flying fox, HeV and NiV show no clinical symptoms of infection 1 suggesting that they have coexisted with flying foxes for a long time.
