Abstract

In spite of their economic advantage and wide application, overhead transmission lines suffer two inherent drawbacks:

Their exposure to atmospheric conditions that may considerably hamper their performance and therefore has to be taken into account in their design.

Their rather large insulation clearances, which result in line towers of considerable sizes, require large corridors for the entire length of the line.
