Abstract

Sampling weights are often a source of confusion for data analysts who are unfamiliar with sampling theory. This chapter will hopefully clarify the issues and demonstrate how and why sampling weights are incorporated at the analysis stage. The reader is encouraged to first read Chapter 6 of this volume (Rust 2013) to understand basic sampling procedures in international large- scale surveys as these procedures will be referenced throughout this chapter.
