Abstract

The skeleton is a complex, metabolically active tissue that serves multiple physiologic functions. It comprises ∼8% of the body weight of an adult person’s normal weight. It serves as a reservoir for the macrominerals, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, yet its most important purpose is to maintain normal posture and locomotion by virtue of its hardness.
