Abstract

The increasing prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD) worldwide is a cause of great concern both for the health of individuals and for the associated medical and economic costs to societies. The recent Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics published in 20111 identified that coronary heart disease (CHD) caused ≈1 of every 6 deaths in the United States in 2007. Figure 61.1 portrays the prevalence of CVD, including CHD, heart failure, stroke, and hypertension, in the U.S. adult population over 20 years, by age and sex. 1
