Abstract

Why should nutritionists and other non-dental professionals screen for oral health? It is because, unfortunately, many individuals with serious dental problems rarely or never see a dentist. Unless others in the health professions whom they are more likely to interact with identify these problems, they will go unrecognized and untreated, often with severe consequences to both oral and overall health. This is why screening and assessment tools for non-dental professionals are necessary to provide baseline evaluation of oral and nutrition status. Conducting oral health nutrition screenings can prevent the development of oral health and nutrition issues. This chapter will discuss how nutrition professionals can help to identify major oral health issues in order to promote optimal health.
