Abstract

Physical activity is an important contributor to total energy expenditure (TEE). Physical activity can vary greatly within an individual from day-to-day, or between individuals because preferred physical activities, practices, and routines differ from one person to the next. These variations impact total daily energy expenditure (EE) and could potentially change energy balance. Accurately measuring the physical activity levels (PALs) of individuals is challenging due to the multi-faceted nature of movement, the limitations of measurement devices and/or self-report, and the potentially high respondent burden it imposes on those who are being measured.
