Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview and to give current examples of observational studies. Specifically we focus on cohort observational studies that incorporate nutritional assessment in this chapter. After a brief review of the types and purposes of observational studies, a detailed description of the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of a cohort study is provided. Next, several cohort studies that have utilized nutritional assessments are discussed to demonstrate the use of the cohort design in nutrition research. This chapter is not meant as an all-inclusive summary but a sampling of work with this focus in mind. Finally, selected nutrition-related publications from these cohort studies are referenced along with the corresponding measured nutritional variables.
